Keys break when they are worn, when the lock is stiff, or when they are turned too hard. The broken piece has to come out before a new key will work.
Where keys break
- House door locks and deadbolts
- Car doors and trunks
- Ignitions
- Business doors
What not to do
- Do not use super glue. It can ruin a lock that was otherwise fine.
- Do not push the piece in with a screwdriver or a pin.
- Do not keep turning the lock with the broken piece inside.
Keep the broken pieces
Hold on to both halves of the key. A clean break can often be read to cut a new key, which is simpler than making one from scratch. On a car key with a chip, the chip is usually in the head, which may still be fine.
Why keys break
- Worn keys with thin, weak spots
- Stiff locks that need cleaning or adjustment
- A door that has shifted, so the bolt binds against the frame
- Using a key to pry, or turning it with pliers

Common questions
Should I try to pull the key out myself?
If part of the key sticks out and slides freely, a gentle, straight pull may work. If it broke off flush, pliers can push it deeper. Stop and call.
Will I need a new lock?
Usually not. If the lock was not damaged, it keeps working with a new key.
