Rekeying your locks after you move

You never know how many copies of the old keys are out there. Rekeying makes them stop working without replacing every lock.

Previous owners, past tenants, contractors, neighbors, and real estate agents may all have had keys to your new home. Rekeying changes the pins inside each lock so only your new keys work.

Count your locks before you call

  • The front door knob and deadbolt, counted separately
  • The back door
  • Any side doors
  • The door from the garage into the house
  • A shed or shop door you want on the same key

Rekey or replace?

Rekey when the locks work well. Replace a lock that is worn out, damaged, or does not lock fully. See deadbolt installation.
