What to try
If part of the key is sticking out and it slides freely, grip it gently and pull it straight out. Do not twist it.
What to avoid
- Super glue or any other adhesive
- Pushing the piece in with a screwdriver or a pin
- Turning the lock with the broken piece inside
- Forcing the other half of the key into the lock
How a locksmith removes it
Thin extraction tools hook the cuts on the broken key and draw the piece out. Once it is out, a new key can be cut. For a car, a new key may also need to be programmed, so have the year, make, and model ready. See broken key extraction.

Common questions
Can I use super glue to get the key out?
No. Glue can bond the key to the inside of the lock and ruin it.
Will the lock need to be replaced?
Usually not. If the lock was not damaged, it keeps working with a new key.
