Lost all your car keys? What to know

When every key is gone, the car can still get a new one. For many makes and models, the key is cut and programmed right where the car is parked.

Losing a key and losing every key are two different problems. With one working key left, a spare is a copy. With no key left, a new key has to be made from scratch and programmed to the car.

What to have ready

  • The year, make, and model
  • Whether the car starts with a key or a push button
  • Confirmation that no working key or fob is left, including spares at home
  • Where the vehicle is parked

What affects the cost

  • The type of key: metal, chip, remote head, or push-to-start smart key
  • Whether any working key is left
  • The make and model

When the dealer is the answer

A few vehicles can only be programmed with dealer equipment. Call (205) 994-8014 with the year, make, and model to find out whether yours is one of them.

Common questions

Do I have to tow the car to the dealer?

Usually not. Many vehicles can get a new key on-site. A few models need dealer equipment.

Is a spare cheaper than replacing a lost key?

Usually. Copying a working key is simpler than making a key when none is left.
