A new fob has to be programmed to your vehicle before it will work. That applies to a spare, a replacement for a lost fob, and a replacement for one that broke. We program fobs on-site for many makes and models.
Fob work we handle
- Spare fobs and smart keys
- Replacements for lost or broken fobs
- Remote head keys
- Push-to-start smart keys
Try a new battery first
A fob that only works up close, or only some of the time, often just needs a new battery. Most fobs use a coin cell, and the battery size is printed on the old one. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced.
When the car says "key not detected"
Many push-to-start cars can still start with a weak fob. Hold the fob against the start button, or set it in the backup spot shown in the owner's manual, then press the button.
What to have ready
- The year, make, and model
- Whether the car starts with a key or a push button
- Whether a working fob is left
- Where the vehicle is parked
If you also need a key cut, see car key replacement.

Common questions
What is the difference between a remote head key and a smart key?
A remote head key has buttons on a key that you turn in the ignition. A smart key stays in your pocket, and the car starts with a push button.
Can you program a fob I bought online?
Sometimes. It has to be the right fob for your vehicle, and it cannot already be locked to another car. Tell us the part when you call.
