A deadbolt only protects the door when the bolt goes all the way into the frame. Doors settle and strike plates shift over time, so a bolt that only goes partway is common.

What makes a deadbolt strong
- A full one-inch throw. The bolt should reach a full inch into the frame when it is locked.
- Long strike screws. The screws that hold the strike plate should reach the framing behind the door jamb, not just the trim.
- A solid door and frame. A deadbolt is only as strong as the wood around it.
- The grade. Deadbolts are graded under ANSI/BHMA standards. Grade 1 is the highest, and Grade 3 is the most basic.
Single or double cylinder
A single-cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A double-cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides. Single-cylinder deadbolts are the usual choice for homes.

Common questions
What is a backset?
It is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole for the lock. Most homes use 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch. The deadbolt has to match, or the bolt will not line up.
Can the new deadbolt use my current key?
Often, yes, if the new lock can be keyed to match. Have a working key on hand.
Can you install a deadbolt I already bought?
Yes, as long as it fits the door.
