Locked out of your car? What to do

Stay calm, stay safe, and skip the coat hanger. Here is what to do first and what to have ready when you call.

First steps

  1. Check every door and the trunk once. Some vehicles do not lock every door.
  2. If a child or a pet is inside, especially on a hot day, call 911 right away.
  3. Move to a safe spot away from traffic.
  4. Find the year, make, and model of the vehicle.
  5. Call (205) 994-8014 and say where the vehicle is parked.

What not to do

A coat hanger or a slim jim can bend the parts inside the door, damage wiring, and scratch the paint. Breaking a window costs far more than a lockout service. Wait for help.

If the key is lost, not locked inside

A lockout gets you back into the car. If the key itself is gone, you need a new key. We cut and program car keys on-site for many makes and models. See car key replacement and the guide Lost all your car keys? What to know.

Common questions

Should I call for a tow if I am locked out?

No. A locksmith can open the car where it is parked. A tow is not needed for keys locked inside.

What if the engine is running?

Say so when you call. Stay near the vehicle and keep clear of traffic.
